Mr. John Clifford is spearheading the effort which has actively begun in June 2006. Here is the text of the proposal for a Walter Lord stamp:
"I am working on a proposal to send to the United States's Postal Service and Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee: to have Walter Lord featured on a commemorative postage stamp, which, however, would not be issued until after May 19, 2012 (due to the Committee's rule that no postal item will be issued sooner than ten years after the individual's death, except for deceased U.S. Presidents).
Walter Lord would be an excellent candidate to be honored, either as part of the Postal Service's category of Literary Arts, or as a separate issue, to honor Walter Lord as an outstanding American."
One can note Walter Lord's various books and stories, dealing with various aspects of US History. In regards to A Night to Remember it should be noted how many survivors living in the United States Walter contacted over the years and interviewed for his best-known book about the unforgettable night the great ship went down.
"I am also looking to note the full numbers f American passengers on Titanic, and how many persons were heading to the United States to start new lives.
I am looking for stories about members who had the chance to meet Walter Lord, and discuss A Night to Remember and his other works. Also, records and experiences of any memorable thoughts Walter Lord shared with others.
What I hope to see is a print image made of Walter, using a copy or original photo of Walter, taken around the time A Night to Remember was first published. A copy of a circa-1950s photo to submit to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee would be greatly appreciated.
The Postal Service generally prepares their stamp images from private photos (which is why none of the Legends of Hollywood stamps have featured the persons on stamp images in their memorable roles).
Please note, however, that anyone can submit a proposal for a postage stamp issue. The recommendation is that at least 3 years time be noted, as the Postal Service will likely review all information about particular person or subject. I plan to include copies of web page citations, tributes, quotations, and copies of Walter Lord's obituaries."
If anyone would like to submit a separate proposal to the Postal Service Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, about a Walter Lord postage stamp, correspondence and supporting documents can be sent to:
